Understanding Burgundy

From a viticultural point of view Burgundy is a very complex place. But to me this is also very much of the region’s charm. As Clive Coates put it in his book ”Cote d’Or” ; Burgundy is an enigma. In that sense other wine regions are easier to deal with; you get the basic idea fairly easily. With its numerous appellations and its large number of small producers Burgundy is an enormous field to take in and understand. But it is also a very comforting thought; there will always be something more to learn, there will always be another wine grower around the corner to discover. There are 4500 winegrowers in Burgundy. 1300 of these bottle their own wine.

In this section you will find interviews with the people behind the wine, mainly wine growers. You will find information on the main grape varieties and the appellation system.
